Remembering the Srebrenica Genocide: Honoring the Lives Lost and Renewing Our Commitment to Remembrance

The Congress of Bosniaks of North America joins the international community in commemorating the solemn anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide, a dark chapter in human history that serves as a stark reminder of the atrocities committed during the aggression on Bosnia and Herzegovina. As we mark 28 years since this tragedy unfolded, we stand united in remembrance, honoring the lives lost, and renewing our commitment to remembrance, justice, and reconciliation.

The Srebrenica Genocide, was the culmination of aggression and systematic killing of Bosniaks around Bosnia and Herzegovina, which resulted in the killing of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys, and the expulsion of thousands of women, children, and elderly from their homes. This terrible crime against humanity remains a painful reminder of the consequences of unchecked hatred, intolerance, and division. It also reminds us of what can happen if the world stays silent to suffering and injustice anywhere.

Congress of Bosniaks of North America firmly believes in the power of remembrance as a means to confront the past, heal wounds, and build a better future. We pay tribute to the victims of the Srebrenica Genocide and extend our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones, especially to the brave mothers of Srebrenica. Their pain and loss has left an indelible mark on the global community, urging us to stand together and ensure that such atrocities never occur again.

This commemoration serves as a call to action, urging governments, civil society organizations, and individuals worldwide to redouble their efforts in preventing and addressing the root causes of violence, discrimination, and hate. We must work tirelessly to promote inclusivity, respect for diversity, and dialogue, fostering an environment where mutual understanding and cooperation flourish.

As part of our commitment to promoting peace and justice, the Congress of Bosniaks of North America participated and will participate in 5 different commemoration events and initiatives, between Bosnia, US and Canada, with the hope of raising awareness about the Srebrenica Genocide and its ongoing impact. Through advocacy, educational workshops, panel discussions, youth remembrance projects and community outreach programs, we aim to engage individuals of all ages and backgrounds, fostering empathy and understanding while emphasizing the importance of justice.

On this solemn occasion, we call upon governments, international organizations, and individuals to join hands in condemning all forms of hate, intolerance, discrimination, and denial of genocide, ensuring that the lessons learned from the Srebrenica Genocide become the driving force for positive change in our societies.
