White Armband Day

White Armband Day

Today, May 31st, the Congress of Bosniaks of North America, along with the wider Bosniak community and countless other organizations, observes White Armband Day, to honor the memory of the victims of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide committed in Prijedor, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Bosnia), between 1992 and 1995. This annual event serves as a solemn reminder of the atrocities committed in Prijedor and aims to promote peace, tolerance, and reconciliation in Bosnia and the region.

The aggression on Bosnia, which took place from 1992 to 1995, witnessed brutal crimes against humanity and human rights violations against Bosniaks. In Prijedor alone, the aggression resulted in the loss of countless lives, including 102 children, and the displacement of tens of thousands of innocent people. White Armband Day symbolizes solidarity with the victims and their families, as well as a commitment to never forget the past.

Throughout Bosnia, events and initiatives are organized to mark White Armband Day. These activities include exhibitions, educational seminars, and panel discussions. By engaging both the younger generation and the wider public, the organizers aim to promote understanding, foster dialogue, and raise awareness about the importance of seeking justice for the victim’s families.

In addition to events in Bosnia, the Bosniak diaspora and sympathizers worldwide will also join in solidarity by wearing white armbands today, attending commemorative gatherings, and sharing their support through social media campaigns. This collective action demonstrates the widespread commitment to remember the victims and work towards preventing similar tragedies in the future. It also demonstrates a commitment by the wider Bosniak community to continue to demand the establishment of memorials for the victims in Prijedor, the development of which is being blocked by Serb authorities to this day.

On this solemn occasion, it is crucial for the international community to reflect on the importance of justice, accountability, and reconciliation. White Armband Day serves as a call to action, urging governments, civil society organizations, and individuals to actively promote human rights, peace, and justice for all. We invite you to join us in wearing a white armband today, in solidarity with the victims and their families.
